This cheeseburger pie recipe is a quick, simple way to make an old favorite. Even works for vegetarians!
Kids and adults alike will enjoy this delicious cheeseburger pie recipe. This is not the open-faced pie of most cheeseburger pie recipes, but rather a less messy self-contained cheeseburger turnover. The recipe makes 3-4 cheeseburger pies, depending on how large a piece everyone would like.
Everyone likes their cheeseburger a little differently – and this recipe is easy to adjust. Ingredient options are presented below so you can make the cheeseburger pie the way you and your family will enjoy it the most.
Recipe ingredients:
- One 9-inch refrigerated pie crust
- 1/2 lb. ground beef, ground turkey, or soy grounds
- 2/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Ketchup
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional recipe add-ins:
- 2-4 strips bacon, cooked and cut into strips
- ¼ cup Red or white onion, diced
- ¼ red pepper, diced
- ¼ green pepper, diced
- ¼ cup mushrooms, diced
- 6-8 sliced pickles, cut into pieces
- ½ tomato, diced
- ½ cup Fresh whole-leaf spinach
Recipe directions:
- Preheat oven to 425, or as directed in pie crust instructions.
- Pour vegetable oil on a frying pan. Heat at medium heat.
- Add ground beef/turkey/soy to frying pan. Sautee, breaking meat into smaller pieces with a spatula.
- Roll out the pie dough. With a knife or pizza cutter, cut the pie dough into thirds or quarters (depending on the number of people eating).
- Once meat is lightly browned, add any of the optional ingredients (bacon, onion, peppers, spinach, mushrooms, tomato, pickles). Sautee until onions are slightly browned and/or spinach is somewhat wilted.
- Carefully place the ground meat mixture into the middle of each pie piece.
- Using one-half cup of shredded cheese, sprinkle equally on each pie piece.
- Fold over the edges of the pie pieces, closing them over the meat and cheese mixture.
- Place pie pieces on baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, or until pie exteriors are golden brown.
- Sprinkle remaining cheese on top of each pie.
- Let cool for five minutes.
- Serve, with generous dollops of ketchup on the side.
Quick Tips:
- You can use three hamburger, turkey burger, or soy burger patties instead of the ground meat. If frozen, defrost the patties in the microwave, then sauté according to the directions above.
- If you plan on using most of the add-ins (bacon, tomato, onions, peppers, spinach, mushrooms, pickles), then cut the pie crust into thirds, so there is enough room for everything.
- Cheeseburger pies will do well with a side of crispy French fries (try sweet potato fries for a different and healthier taste!), potato salad, macaroni, or garden salad.
