Why bother with prepared, packaged guacamole recipes when you can easily make this fresh recipe very quickly?

First, start with the freshest avocados from your store or market. How can you tell if an avocado is ready to be made into guacamole? Make sure the fruit is not too green or too brown. When you find one that looks just right, try the gentle squeeze test. If the fruit leaves an indentation when squeezed, you know it is ripe and can be easily mashed into guacamole. If the fruit is too hard you will have a hard time mashing it and the taste will be a bit sour.

If you would rather make the guacamole several days to a week later, buy green fruit. The warmer the air temperature, the quicker the fruit will ripen.

This dish will take you approximately ten to fifteen minutes to make.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • 3 avocados
  • 1/2 cup diced tomato. You use any type of tomato: cherry, vine, tomatillo, or roma.
  • 3 minced large garlic cloves, or approximately 2 1/2 teaspoons prepared minced garlic
  • 1/3 cup chopped red, yellow or white onion. Red onions tend to be a bit sweeter than white or yellow onions.
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed or bottled) If you like a tangy, lemony flavored guacomole, use more lemon. The acid in the lemon also helps to preserve the guacamole. It keeps it from turning brown in the refridgerator.

Recipe Directions:

  1. Slice avocados lengthwise and remove pit and skin. Also remove any excess brown areas from the fruit. Make sure the stem is also removed from the fruit.
  2. Mash avocados with a fork, then stir mashed avocados until smooth - it's okay if there are a few small lumps.
  3. Add tomato, garlic, and onion. Stir until blended thorougly.
  4. Finally, add the lemon juice, and stir until again until fully blended.

Depending on the size of avocados, this recipe makes approximately six 1/3 cup servings.

Use guacamole in many different ways:

  • Use as a traditional dip with tortilla chips. Guacamole looks very festive for the fourth of July if pared with red, white and blue corn chips.
  • Try is as a side along with sour cream and fresh salsa to compliment nachos.
  • Also use as a side with rice and beans to compliment Mexican dishes.
  • Use guacamole as a stuffing for burritos or tacos.
  • Try guacamole as a spread on top of a hamburger. And if your a vegan or vegetarian, this recipe also tastes very good on top of vegetarian chicken or burgers.
  • Guacamole can even be used as a topping for a salad. Use your imagination. Guacamole isn't just for tortilla chip dipping anymore!
