Guacamole is delicious when served with many dishes or appetizers, and it is actually very easy to make at home.

Guacamole uses the taste and texture of mashed avocado, combined with other vegetables, to compose a perfect dip that not only goes well with Mexican foods, but it also makes a great addition to sandwiches and meat dishes.

Ingredients

  • 3 large avocados
  • 1 large tomato
  • 1/2 cup minced onion
  • A few cilantro leaves
  • 1/2 tablespoon salt
  • 1/2 tablespoon pepper
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1 jalapeno or habanero chili pepper (for spicier guacamole)
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder

Directions

  1. Cut the Avocados in half, and remove the meat. This is done by removing the pit, and then carving out the meat with a spoon by scraping against the skin from the inside. Place the meat in a bowl, and mash down on it with a fork or spoon until the meat is smooth and creamy.
  2. Dice the tomato and mince about 1/2 cup of onion, and stir these into the bowl with the avocado.
  3. Take a few leaves of cilantro, and mince them with a knife to get very small pieces. Mix these into the avocado in the bowl.
  4. Add salt, pepper, lime juice, and chili powder to the bowl, and mix these ingredients into the avocado blend gently with the spoon.
  5. To make the guacamole spicy, add either some jalapeno or habanero pepper. Habanero pepper is much spicier than jalapeno, so be careful. Mince a portion of the pepper (or, if you want the dip very spicy, the whole thing) and mix into the guacamole. It is now finished!

Variations and Uses

For a creamier guacamole, try adding some sour cream to the bowl after step one, and blending it in with the mashed avocado. To make the tomato blend into the mix, rather than stand out in chunks, stir the mix well after step two, and mash down on the chunks of tomato. This will incorporate the taste of tomato into the whole dip. To make the guacamole sweeter, add a little white sugar (maybe about a quarter of a teaspoon) or pour a little Sprite into the dip to get a sweeter and runnier guacamole. Minced mango also makes for a tasty, sweet dip.

Traditionally, guacamole serves to compliment tortilla chips. However, it has many other uses. It is great when served with other Mexican dishes, such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, or rice and beans. It may also be cooked inside burritos or quesadillas. One great way to make guacamole quesadillas is to take one tortilla, and place some cheese and guacamole on it (spread across the tortilla somewhat evenly) and then place the other on top, and fry on both sides. Guacamole also goes well on sandwiches, or with Mexican breakfast dishes, such as huevos rancheros. It is also great when served as a side to grilled chicken or pork.
