Saucy baked beans are standard at many cookouts. Serve it up vegetarian BBQ style or flavored with plenty of meat.

For many families, a barbeque just isn't complete without a side dish of baked beans. The saucy taste of baked beans is a natural pairing for grilled hamburgers and hotdogs. Be sure to make plenty. If you do happen to have leftovers, you'll find that beans made with these recipes taste even better the following day.

Family Reunion Baked Beans

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 pound of cocktail wieners
  • 1 small onion (or about 1/2 cup), chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons of butter or margarine for sautéing
  • 2 (16 ounce) cans of baked beans
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 Tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons barbeque sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Directions:

  1. Bring a small saucepan of water to boil. Add cocktail wieners and boil for 3 minutes to remove excess fat. Remove wieners from water immediately.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  3. To another saucepan add 2 Tablespoons of butter. Melt over medium-low heat. Add onions and sauté gently until onions are transparent.
  4. In a large bowl mix together the canned baked beans, mustard powder, brown sugar, white sugar, ketchup, barbeque sauce and the Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Add the cocktail wieners and sautéed onion. Mix well.
  6. Pour into a casserole dish and bake, covered 40 to 50 minutes.

Summer time cookouts and picnics can be difficult for family and friends who follow a vegetarian life style, or for those who simply aren't fond of meat. The following baked bean recipe has plenty of flavor, but no meat. Not only does it give vegetarian guests another food option, it tastes good enough that all your guests will enjoy it.

Veggie Baked Beans

Ingredients:

  • 2 (16 ounce cans of vegetarian baked beans)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 1 medium bell pepper diced
  • 1 Tablespoons chili powder
  • 3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 Tablespoons vinegar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt to taste
  • dash of cayenne pepper (optional)

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a Dutch oven (or large casserole dish) combine the baked beans, onion and bell pepper. Season with chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, garlic powder and salt.
  3. Add a dash of cayenne pepper, if desired.
  4. Cover and bake for one hour in a preheated oven.

These baked bean recipes are crowd pleasers just the way they are. However, for creative twists, consider adding pineapple for more of a sweet and sour flavor. Also for baked beans with meat, hamburger, spicy sausage, sliced hotdogs, or bacon can be substituted or added in combination. However you serve them, these baked beans are sure to be a hearty and welcome addition to the meal.
