For those who are not familiar with minnows, they are tiny (about two centimeters in length) fish, usually white or grayish in color. Many Asians, especially the Japanese, regularly eat their rice sprinkled with minnows, as the fish add an extra flavor as well as texture to steamed rice.

Fortunately, making minnow rice dish is very easy; it is guaranteed that even the most hopeless kitchen klutz can do no wrong with this recipe. The ingredients are also cheap and can be commonly found in almost all supermarkets:

Minnow Rice Dish

  • rice
  • minnow fish
  • carrots (or any other vegetables of choice)
  • soy sauce (optional)
  • plain water
  • sake (Japanese rice wine) - optional

Steps To Making Minnow Rice

  1. Cut or shred carrots (or any other vegetables of choice) into small pieces.
  2. Wash the rice with water, making sure that the water is not drained more than twice (this ensures that the nutritional value of the rice is not lost).
  3. Place the washed rice inside a rice cooker.
  4. Spread the vegetables and minnow evenly tin the rice.
  5. Add soy sauce and Japanese rice wine if desired.
  6. Add water to everything, making sure that the water does not go above one knuckle's height above the rice.
  7. Close the rice cooker and let it do its magic.
  8. Relax, and delicious and healthy minnow rice will be ready in no time!

Minnow rice can be eaten with practically any other dishes: meats, seafood and vegetables. The list is endless!
