There are dips made for nibblers and dips made for guests with a real appetite. This recipe for Taco Dip eats like a meal, but should keep your nibblers happy, too.

Chip dips are popular year round. A hearty, home made dip is a welcome addition to potluck meals, graduation parties, summer cook outs, holiday gatherings, and of course, super bowl parties.

Basic sour cream dips are great, but it's the dips that are unique that really get attention. Chip dips with a little unexpected flavor stand out and keep folks coming back for more. Often, the key to success is finding a dip recipe that boldly imitates the flavor of a main dish.

The recipe for Taco Dip, found below, produces one of those hearty dishes that hits the spot. It’s combination of hamburger, cheeses and seasonings has all the appeal of a simple dip, but satisfies the taste buds like a meal. If you enjoy foods with a Tex-Mex flavor, give this delicious dip a try.

Basic Recipe for Taco Dip

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of lean hamburger
  • 1 ( 8 ounce) package of cream cheese
  • 1 (8 ounce) carton of sour cream
  • 1/2 cup Miracle Whip Salad Dressing
  • 1 (7 1/2 ounce) can of tomato sauce
  • 1 package of your favorite taco seasoning
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 1 cup of mild salsa
  • 1 cup of shreded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup of cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:

  1. Mix together the cream cheese, sour cream and the Miracle Whip.
  2. Place this mixture into a glass 9 x 13 inch pan.
  3. Brown the hamburger and drain it well.
  4. Add the taco seasoning and water.
  5. Simmer until the water evaporates and the mixture thickens.
  6. Add the tomato sauce and salsa.
  7. Pour evenly over the cream cheese base. (Chilling the base for 1/2 to one hour is optional, but will help establish layers.)
  8. Top with grated cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
  9. Bake in 350 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes or until the dip begins to bubble on top.
  10. Serve warm with your choice of nacho or corn chips.

Customizing Your Dip Recipe

You can create a lower fat and reduced calorie version of this recipe that still tastes great. Substitute light cream cheese, light or no fat sour cream and reduced calorie Miracle Whip for the full fat counterparts listed above. You can also use cheeses that contain part skim milk.

For additional flavor, add 1/4 cup diced onion to the hamburger as it browns. Drain and assemble recipe as directed above.

For even greater impact, try this recipe using zesty or hot salsas.

To create multiple dips, divide the layers evenly between 3 glass loaf pans. Bake as usual.
