Cluttered shelves filled with barely used cookbooks can be a thing of the past thanks to the extensive range of helpful recipe sites available on the internet. Many sites allow readers to submit their own recipes online and include a rating system to reflect how popular the recipe has been with others who have tried it.
An Australian website with over 14,000 recipes from magazines such as Super Food Ideas and Australian Good Taste. Free membership allows users access to the forums, the option of rating recipes and the ability to create an online cookbook of favourite recipes from the site. It is not possible for users to submit their own recipes on this site.
Recipes are available with a choice of US or metric measurements, the option of adjusting the number of serves and information about total preparation and cooking time. Free registration allows users to create their own ‘recipe box’ on the site for filing favourite recipes and recipes can be printed out on a full page or in a 3x5 or 4x6 format to suit recipe file cards.
There is a ‘create-a-cookbook’ option that allows registered users to save a range of recipes to their recipe box, including personal recipes that can be listed as private and therefore not shared on the general site. Recipes can then be selected to be included in a cookbook. After selecting a cover image, title and format, the resulting cookbook can be previewed. It can then be ordered through the website – a great gift idea or simply a wonderful way to gather favourite recipes in one place.
An extensive range of recipes, including sections for copycat recipes (restaurant recipes or home recipes that taste just like restaurant or familiar pre-packaged foods), cooking for your pet and an entire category dedicated to chocolate recipes. Options include ratings, shopping lists, ability to adjust serving size & a recipe word puzzle.
Recipes are sorted by ingredients, which is great for finding something quickly to use up a specific ingredient in your fridge or pantry. The site includes an extensive range of charts, tables and information including conversion charts for a variety of different measurements systems, substitutions for specific ingredients such a dairy and a how to choose the correct wine to match a meal. There is also a culinary dictionary and comparison of English and American cooking terminology.
The Food & Drink section right here at Suite101 has a large number of writer-contributed recipes as well as articles on cooking. Divided into categories, it is a very easy site to search and find recipes.
