Who doesn't love these deliciously tasty treats? Find out how to quickly make them at home to enjoy any time.

Chinese Donuts are common fare at a Chinese restaurant buffet. Hardly anyone can pass them by without at least a sampling. Fried sweet dough and pastries have a long history in China, according to China Vista. This resource site for Chinese culture informs, “The origin of Chinese pastry can be traced back to the Neolithic Age when the stone grinder was invented to make the grinding of grain possible.”

There are two main ways to recreate this yummy dessert. One is from scratch and the other is a shortcut route. They’re equally delicious. Which ever method you choose will work, just enjoy the process. “Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all," said Harriet Van Horne.

  • 1/3 cup butter flavored shortening (or butter)

  1. Mix flour, salt, and baking powder in a medium sized mixing bowl.
  2. Crumble and incorporate the shortening into the flour mixture until there are no large clumps remaining.
  3. Add the milk and stir just until the dough forms into a ball.
  4. Knead 8-12 times. Don’t over knead.
  5. Heat an inch or two of oil over medium to medium-high heat.
  6. Take a ¼ cup of dough and roll into a ball. Gently flatten to resemble a biscuit shape.
  7. Fry in oil until both sides are very lightly browned, about 2 minutes per side.
  8. Roll the donut around on a plate spread with sugar. Delicious, homemade, frugal Chinese doughnuts!

Short-Cut Chinese Donuts Recipe

This is a dessert you can make in a flash. It only takes three ingredients and no preparation.

  • Can of refrigerated biscuits (any kind will do)
  • Oil for frying
  • Sugar for coating

Directions:

  1. Heat enough oil in a deep pan to completely submerge biscuits.
  2. Heat the oil to approximately 350 degrees.
  3. Drop the biscuits into the oil and fry until lightly browned, turning midway through the cooking time.
  4. Drain on a rack or brown paper bag for 1-2 minutes and then roll around in white sugar. These are dangerously good.

These can be eaten as they are normally served, with sugar, or they can be served with honey drizzled over the top. Another way to enjoy them is topped with a favorite preserve or jelly.

Anyone can make these simple Chinese treats. No trip to the restaurant is necessary. In fact, no chop sticks are even necessary. Miss Piggy had some wise words on the subject, : "You do not sew with a fork, and I see no reason why you should eat with knitting needles.”(From Miss Piggy’s Guide to Life)
