Some of the most popular sandwiches are fish sandwiches, meatball subs, and BLT's. Check out these recipes and make your own at home!
We all have our favorite sandwiches that we love to order when we go out to eat. We’ve all had fish sandwiches, meatball subs, and bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches, but you’ve probably on made BLTs at home yourself. Not only is it less expensive to make these great sandwiches at home, but you can add your own seasonings and make these traditional favorites your own, like this spiced up BLT made with fried green tomatoes instead of the traditional red tomato style. Oh yeah, you’ve gotta try it!
Lemon Pepper Dill Fish ‘n Chips
Ingredients:
4 flounder filets
1 cup of plain flour
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup of seasoned bread crumbs
2 teaspoons lemon pepper
Olive oil
Soft sub bread
Dill tartar sauce
Directions:
Put ½ cup of plain flour on one plate, two beaten eggs in a shallow bowl, and the remaining flour, bread crumbs, and lemon pepper mixed together on another plate.
Dip flounder fillets in flour, then egg, then bread crumb mixture, and fry in a skillet on medium-high heat with about ¼” of olive oil. This will take less than 10 minutes.
Serve fish on soft bread with a dill flavored tartar sauce.
Onion rings make the perfect side!
Dill Tartar Sauce:
1 cup Miracle Whip salad dressing
1 teaspoon of spicy brown mustard
2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish (or dill if you prefer)
1 tablespoon minced onion
1 teaspoon minced garlic
½ teaspoon dill weed
½ teaspoon black pepper
Splash Worcestershire sauce
Splash of lemon juice
Simply mix together and refrigerate.
Meatball Subs
Ingredients:
Meatballs –
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 pound ground Italian sausage
½ cup Italian bread crumbs (more or less depending on the consistency of your meatballs as you are mixing - you want them firm but not dry)
1 egg
Subs –
Sub sandwich loaves
Your favorite jar of spaghetti sauce (or homemade if you want!)
Shredded mozzarella cheese
Directions:
This sub sandwich is so easy to put together, and it’s great to serve for any get together because you can toss the meatballs and sauce into a crock pot to stay warm, and your guests can help themselves as they please.
Simply mix the meatball ingredients together and roll into balls. Fry the meatballs in a skillet until they are done through the middle. Cover them in spaghetti sauce and simmer on low for about 20 minutes.
When ready to serve, simply spoon the meatballs and a little sauce into a hollowed out sub roll and cover with grated mozzarella.
If you want these extra fancy, top with a little sautéed mushroom and some black olives. Delicious!
Enjoy a glass of red wine and a Caesar salad for a complete meal.
Fried Green Tomato BLT’s
Ingredients:
Green tomatoes, sliced
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups Italian bread crumbs
Canola oil for frying tomatoes
1 large onion, sliced into rings (optional but very good)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound of bacon, fried
Mayo or Miracle Whip
Cheddar cheese slices
Hardy bread like a sliced French loaf (soft bread won’t hold up to this sandwich)
Directions:
First, fry the bacon strips and set aside.
Then, if you are using the onions, slice them, trying to keep each section of rings whole (see picture below). Sautee the rings in olive oil until they are a little caramelized, cover them in foil to keep them warm, and set aside.
Slice the green tomatoes about ¼” or so thick. You’ll only need a couple of slices per sandwich.
Dip the green tomato slices in egg and then in bread crumbs, and fry in canola oil until nicely browned and tender. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
Spread mayonnaise or salad dressing on sliced bread, and assemble sandwiches with cheese, fried green tomatoes, bacon, and sautéed onion rings.
You’ll never look at BLTs the same way again! Try serving these with potato cakes!
